May 20, 2020: SPA's position on telehealth

SPA would like to recognize the amazing work of members in adjusting to COVID-19 restrictions and rapidly pivoting their provision of services to continue to provide patient care. SPA supports the CPA's Position on Tele-Rehabilitation:

"The CPA is advocating in support of physiotherapists and physiotherapist assistants to ensure that:

  • Canadians have access to physiotherapy services, both intake assessments and subsequent treatments, via telemedicine, telerehabilitation, or virtual delivery modes. This would enable continued access/prevent service interruption for those who are situated in rural and remote settings, as well as for those in quarantine or where social distancing measures have been enacted or recommended."

SPA's Third Party Payers Committee (TPPC) and Board of Directors have submitted a proposal to WCB regarding telehealth codes for injured workers. The WCB has indicated that they will begin the process of developing new codes to use during the pandemic.

Although SGI tele-rehabilitation services are approved until July 15, SGI has indicated that they are aware that the government directives for management of COVID-19 could alter this date. SPA's TPPC and Board recognize that this situation requires close monitoring and will engage with SGI on discussions to revise the date to accommodate government and health directives as appropriate.

SPA recognizes that ongoing discussions will be needed with third party insurers to understand and review the appropriate use and benefits of telerehab services going forward.

SPA will continue to support members and advocate on their behalf during this critical time. Please get in touch with Sherry Chen, Executive Director, if you have any comments or concerns (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.).
